Gift Baskets for the Military

By Shirley George Frazier

Gift baskets destined for military bases were items that most of us didn’t consider as a source of revenue. But now, these baskets will play an important role in keeping both families and enlisted personnel comforted in this time of uncertainty.

The current call to arms will affect men and women located in every U.S. city, which means that gift basket designers in every state will have access to local products which will be cherished by each person who receives something reminiscent of home.

Some of these items include photo frames to hold pictures of loved ones (including four-legged friends); favorite snacks such as popcorn, pretzels, toffee and cookies; and fun products which include plush animals wearing shirts emblazoned with local football team logos, wall banners, music CDs or cassettes, and other local mementos.

Before catering to this newly-opened market, you must investigate the best shipping options for delivering these family baskets. Visit UPS, Federal Express, DHL, and Airborne Web sites to research overseas shipping rates and delivery schedules. The United States Postal Service may not be the best shipper for this cause.

If you are located near a military base or know any military personnel, either of these contacts may give you insight into which shipper provides the best service. The military may have their own internal shipping methods that you can use to expedite deliveries. Be sure to ask recruiters and other knowledgeable outlets about these alternatives.

It is a well-known fact that overseas shipments can be rather costly, but those who place orders will be ready for and willing to pay the additional charges.

Marketing your military baskets is best done through networking and sending news releases to the local media. Your contacts at houses of worship, schools, corporations and other business organizations will help you to find individuals with relatives who will be shipped overseas.

Let them know that you are sending baskets to military bases. Use a phrase such as, "Our baskets are filled with love from home" on flyers and other print literature to create interest. Your local newspaper will also want to know about your military baskets. Write a press release that reveals the baskets' contents and why the products are significant to military personnel from the area.

Gift baskets keep the spirits of families and enlisted personnel connected. It’s up to each designer to bring both groups together through this creative field. Don’t let them down.
